KEYNOTE SPEAKERS

Mazumdar-ShawExecutive Chairperson – Biocon Limited and Biocon Biologics Limited
Kiran Mazumdar-Shaw serves as Chairman and Managing Director of India’s leading Biotechnology enterprise, Biocon.
She is highly respected in the corporate world and has been recently voted by Nature Biotechnology as The Most Influential in Bio-business person outside Europe and USA.Ms. Shaw received a graduate honors degree in Zoology from Bangalore University (1973) and qualified as a Master Brewer from Ballarat University, Australia (1975).
Ms Shaw also received an honorary Doctorate of Science in 2004, from her alma mater, Ballarat University, in recognition of her pre-eminent contributions to the field of Biotechnology. She has also been awarded honarary doctorates from University of Abertay, Dundee, U.K. (2007), University of Glasgow, U.K. (2008) and Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh, U.K. (2008).
Ms Shaw chairs Karnataka’s Vision Group on Biotechnology and also served on the Board of Science Foundation, Ireland. She presently serves on the Advisory Council of the Government’s Department of Biotechnology where she has been instrumental in bringing government, industry and academia together, to chart a clear and progressive growth path for Biotechnology in India. Most recently, she has been invited to join the Prime Minister’s Council on Trade & Industry in India and the US-India CEO Forum.
Ms. Shaw is the recipient of several prestigious awards including the ET Businesswoman of the Year, Ernst & Young’s Entrepreneur of the Year Award for Life Sciences & Healthcare, Technology Pioneer, etc. Her most cherished awards are the national awards, PADMASHRI (1989) and PADMA BHUSHAN (2005) presented to her by the President of India, for her pioneering efforts in Industrial Biotechnology.
Under her stewardship, Biocon has evolved from its inception in 1978 as an industrial enzymes company to a fully integrated Bio-pharmaceutical enterprise encompassing a well balanced business portfolio of products and services with a research focus on Diabetes, Oncology and Auto-immune disease. During this transition, Biocon has established 2 subsidiaries: Syngene (1994) to provide development support services for discovery research and Clinigene (2000) to cater to services in clinical development.
A leading US trade publication, Med Ad News, in its 2007 listings has ranked Biocon 20th amongst the leading biotechnology companies in the world and the 7th largest Biotech employer globally.

Sucheta Rawal
Sucheta Rawal is an award-winning South Asian food and travel writer contributing to over two dozen publications including TIME Magazine, CNN, Travel+Leisure, HuffPost and AAA. Sucheta is a three time.
TEDx speaker and author of five ‘Beato Goes To’ children’s books that educate kids about the diversity of the world. She has personally traveled to over 110 countries across seven continents and speaks about her experiences from her firsthand perspective. She also founded the non-profit, Go Eat Give, to raise awareness of different cultures through travel, food and community service. Sucheta’s mission is to promote meaningful and sustainable travel for the betterment of the global community.

BURGLARY AT SANATAN MANDIR
There was a burglary at the Sanatan Mandir on 1/6/24. Police have registered case and started investigation. Insurance Company has been informed. Please contact SM President Mr. Bipin Changela or SM BOG Chairman Mr. Bharat Desai for more information.
IACA’S NEW INITIATIVE – WOMEN’S FORUM
At the onset of the new year, IACA launched a new initiative – The IACA Women’s Forum featuring women IACA members. 
The objective of this forum is to support women of Indian origin in the community while addressing their unique needs.
Members of the women’s forum got together in the past couple of weeks to brainstorm ideas and prioritize areas of interest. In order to get started in 2024, the team agreed on the following activities for the first quarter.   1. Start a Resource Helpline for women in the community       2. Raise awareness of mental health issues among adults and children  3. Volunteering at Elder care facilities4. Start a Book Club for women
We invite women who are interested in participating in one or more of the above activities to reach out to Gita Vemparala at womensforum@iacaatl.org. Please specify which activity you would like to be part of. This is an exciting opportunity to be part of this forum from its inception.The table below, consists of a complete list of activities which will be considered for implementation in the coming months.
1.  Women’s Supporta.  Helpline – in time, have an email that a group of us can manage (legal consultation needed on this item)b.  Support for single momsc.   How to handle domestic abuse and domestic violence cases (Have a speaker from Raksha?)
2.  Giving Back to the Communitya.   Have volunteering activities such as feeding the homelessb.  Habitat for humanity projectsc.   Women’s shelterd.  Elder care facilitiese.   Fundraising for people in needf.    Have a celebration for celebrating women – have a volunteering activity
3.  Women’s Health – Physical, Mental, Emotionala.   Yogab.  Hikingc.   Give out stress-free/stress-buster kitd.  Healthcare camp for women without insurancee.   Awareness – Mental health issues among adults and children
4.  Women’s Financial Management/Independencea.   How to build strong financial foundation for homemakersb.  Financial independence for single moms
5.  Women in Science and Businessa.   Promoting and helping women entrepreneursb.  Have talks/seminars by successful womenc.   Teach: MS Office Skillsd.  How to make a resumee.   Make them employable
6.  Legala.   Immigration adviceb.  What to do when summoned to court for a minor infraction such as a traffic ticket
7.    Parenting Support for Women a.    Moms’ role in nurturing/taking care of special needs childrenb.    Awareness of suicide among childrenc.    Educate parentsd.    Family counselinge.    Teach kids how to prepare for high school, college
8.    Women’s Bonding Activities – these activities are for bonding and building trusta.    Book clubsb.    Art sessions (sip and paint)c.    Hikingd.    Dancinge.    Tea time socialization
