This topic is of interest to Indian people as Indians and India are the beneficiaries of the software evolution. This industry created a vast pool of high income earners and millionaire entrepreneurs among Indians in USA and put India on the high tech map. My reason to create this article is in response to Marc Andreesen’s (founder of Netscape) Wall Street Journal article after HP Board decided to spin off the PC business and focus on “software”.
I started my career in electronic design automation software design in 1983 and seen the rise of application of software in all areas as I worked through TATA UNISYS to MICROSOFT. They were the days of mass adoption and the eventual meteoric rise of the software industry. It found its application from transaction and information intensive industries such as Insurance, Banking, Manufacturing, Distribution to Media and to all other verticals. As the miniaturization and speed of semiconductors and communications doubled every other year, these devices and software found its way to every nook and corner of our daily lives.
Successful technology ventures of the future continue to be software enabled services that will create level playing fields among traditional brick and mortar business. While some industries have the hegemony of old world investments in production and distribution, they will have to embrace software as a differentiator for their operational excellence and ultimate survival.
The inefficiency in Education, Defense and Healthcare is killing this country in the name of empowering, protecting and saving the lives of our citizens. It is high time the creative genius of the software industry take over these sectors.
While software outsourcing and continuous changes in underlying technology cause disruption from time to time, is software career still a career of choice for our children in America?
